9 Quirky Things About Me

My online “family” at Clicknewz is hosting a blog meme… I haven’t done one of these for YEARS, and NEVER one on this blog. So here you go… 9 quirky things about me!

1. I do a crossword puzzle every night before I go to sleep. In bed. In pen. New York Times only. (I;m pretty good up until Thursdays, then I get kinda stuck).

2. I always have my toes polished but never my fingernails.

3. I wear my watch on my right wrist even though I’m right-handed. My dad is left-handed, so when I got my first watch I thought everyone wore their watches on their right wrists. Never could get used to switching it.

4. I have a favorite pencil type — Ticonderoga-Dixon, #2-1/2. Really sharp. Like, lethally sharp.

5. I have a “thing” for New Orleans. I don’t really believe in reincarnation in the traditional sense, but I’m really drawn to New Orleans.

6. I hate (H-A-T-E) red peppers, jalapeno peppers, “hots…” I won’t eat anything they touch. (But I do like raw green bell peppers. Go figure).

7. I sometimes talk in strange accents just to amuse myself (and my kids).

8. I am often mistaken for Greek, Italian, Jewish, Armenian… pretty much everything but what I am (half Mexican, half English/Scottish/German). I blend really well.

9. The perfect birthday present for me would be a karaoke machine.

    Okay, Lain, here I go—just for the fun of it!
    1. I love watching HGTV.
    2. I like to eat white rice with raisins, milk, and a spoonful of sugar.
    3. I have a HUGE fear of spiders (even the itty-bitty ones).
    4. I weighed 87 lbs. when I got married in ’73.
    5. I wear socks with my flip-flops.
    6. I still wash dishes by hand.
    7. I have four talking clocks in my house. I just like to hear them announce the hour. :-)
    They are each set a little off from one another, so I can hear one at a time.
    8. I would rather wrap presents than open them.
    9. I could eat spaghetti and meat sauce every day. So, who’s stopping me? ;-)

    1. I love tile/domino games…Mexican Train, Shanghai, etc. Would love to learn how to play Mah Jong. I was most delighted when Pogo recently released an app that allows me to play their Majong Safari on my iPod Touch!
    2. DITTO on my nails…my fingernails chip instantly!
    3. I am left-sided: left-handed, left-eyed, my left foot is 1/2 a size bigger than my right…but I use scissors with my right hand.
    4. I love thin gel pens…hate how quickly they run out, though, and that they can’t be refilled or recycled :(
    5. I am fascinated by Paris (my paternal grandfather was French), but have never been there. Yet.
    6. I was known as the kid who loved her veggies. Never met a veggie I didn’t like. Still love them all.
    7. Three things make me gag: eggshell in my food, gristle of any kind (I’m “the wife who would only eat lean,”) and fish bones. Instant BLECH.
    8. I’m adopted, and often people tell me I look EXACTLY like some distant relative or friend…being blonde-haired and blue eyed, I’m pretty generic looking. Always fascinates me to hear that and wonder if I’m actually related…
    9. Lain, we ARE related, because I can also roll my tongue (so can my daughter). I hear that’s genetic. My (adoptive) mom & dad can’t do it, and they think it’s the freakiest thing about me! LOL

    I loved your number 8. It reminded me of noticing old movies where anyone with a darker complexion played all kinds of ethnic parts. When you mentioned your accents — I chuckled. You make me laugh! Thanks!

    1. I’m terrified of spiders too:D
    2. At home I always eat with the smaller fork. At restaurants the fork tines better be right – I’ll worry if I start bringing my own plasticware:D
    3. I’m starting to freak at all of the changes my 46 year young body is introducing me to (seriously freak).
    4. I love music – love to play Crazy Cow Music Trivia on Facebook.
    5. I love to play games – board games, card games, computer games. Not so into the newer gaming systems but oh how I loved the Super Nintendo (Mario and Donkey Kong rocked).
    6. I love shoes – especially unique costumey dress shoes.
    7. I love purple – clothes, scrapbooking supplies and recently decorated our master bedroom and bath in PURPLE – total happiness!
    8. Beauty and the Beast is my all time fave Disney movie – bonjour!
    9. I’m not a great cook but I LOVE watching the Food Network.

    I’ve never heard the word meme before so here’s to a new wrinkle in my brain.
    1. I visited Cuba to present a chapter from my master’s thesis at a conference at the U of Havana. Castro was like 5 feet away from me one day.
    2. My favorite author is Julia Alvarez (How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, In the Time of the Butterflies)
    3. I only like watching the American Idol auditions. You gotta wonder if we moms do our kids an injustice when we tell them they can do anything…some things like singing you just need to be born with.
    4. I have always wanted to live in Greenwich Village (downtown NYC, NYU, Halloween Parade, etc. etc)
    5. When I was 12, I spent my entire summer in the Dominican Republic and spent my last couple of weeks there trying to convince my parents to let me live there for a few years. I did not want to come back and I didn’t even want to speak English anymore. LOL.
    6. I LOVE white chocolate martinis (Godiva white liquer, Frangelico hazelnut liquer, a little grey goose and a poof of cinnamon on top)…yummy) and Reisling (it’s the only wine I drink oh and moscato)
    7. I spent a week in Paris my senior year in High School with nuns. I need to go back without them.
    8. If I don’t get pregnant by December 31, 2011, I’m going to adopt. My husband is on notice.
    9. I have a dream to quit my job and become a independently wealthy making scrapbooks for other people. LOL. Hey, it’s my dream

    some day I will get a blog and play along, until that time I will share two things here – one I can triple roll my tounge, kinda freaky, and two I am a lefty who wears her watch on her left wrist, because that is where I always look first…the right wrist just slowed down my time telling skills.
