Ep 07: Layout a Day – The Podcast: My Scrapbook Room (plus Video)

by Lain Ehmann on July 13, 2011

This week’s podcast is a little different as it’s got a video to accompany it! Over at the Big Picture MotherLOAD class, we’re talking about organization this week, and I promised a tour of my scrapbook room — unedited, uncleaned, unswept! Never fear; if you prefer to listen only, you can do that, too. You’ll miss the Groovy Girls, but c’est la vie.

You’ll see:

-What I eat for lunch (really!)

-What is in the middle of my floor ALL THE TIME

-Where the magic happens

-Where the piles are hidden

…And much, much more!

P.S. If you would prefer to watch the video on YouTube, you can see it here.

I love all the floor space!  Thanks for the tour!

Thanks, Donna! My girls really like it. :)

I absolutely adore your scrapbook space. Thank you so much for the tour!

I have also taken the podcast to heart and “reverse chronologically” organized my pattern paper. I’m hoping this makes me use some of my old stuff.

Thanks for keeping it real Lain! It is so refreshing to see a “realistic” scrap room doesn’t look staged or perfectly organized! You can tell that you use your stuff and if I had a room like yours, it would like yours too! Thanks for sharing! :)

    Thanks for watching!! :)

Let me know how it works for you!!

Absolutely agree about keeping it real.  How many of us can really buy all the same matching bins or pieces of furniture?  We use what we have, buy a few things here and there and then put an ecletic mix together to create our scrap space.  This is exactly what you show and it is functional, practical and beautiful!  Thanks for sharing and keeping true to all the advice you share with us.

The color turned out great–good choice for a room without a lot of light from windows!   For my MotherLOAD assignment during organization week, I took my fairly well organized room and made a mess.  Today I am in here cleaning it up–I made a pilgrimage to Ikea for another Expedit and some various other things, and now I have to put it all away.  I did, however, set up the new Expedit during organization week.  It’s just that the carnage I created in doing so was greater than the oasis of organizational bliss created by the new bookcase!   I have sort of listened along as you moved from your closet to various spaces in (I think?) rental houses to this new space–enjoy, Lain!  Love the Alex carts.  Next on my list when I go back to Ikea in a few years!   The closest one to us is about 3.5 hours away so we have to space it out.

What a great room! I am so happy for you and I know you will love every second spent in that craft room. What you said at the end of the video encouraged me to wait it out. Right now I have a little space for my scrapbooking, stamping and card making in my living room. I promised myself to have my own craft room one day so I am crossing my fingers for next year.  So congratulations on your beautiful room and love your work stations. WOW!

I love that you did a video of your space!!

What a fun tour! I liked just seeing the guts of your creative space and it gave me a glimpse into your creative process. Do you ever worry that with such a large stash, you will forget about stuff you have? I worry about that, and my stash is not as big. Also, keeping a whole file of Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc — I do this, too, but then when the season rolls around again, there’s more new, cool stuff to buy and it’s hard to use up the old stuff! LOL Lastly, a lot of things in your room are in open storage. Around here, it would be covered in dust after just a few weeks — not true where you live? I’m in dusty ol’ Tucson.

Let me know if it works for you — thank you for listening! :)

    Thank you so much! :)

I do sometimes forget what I have — that’s the worst! I try to regularly go through my stash to see what I have and to purge items I’m not using.
Re: dust — not much dust here in Lexington! I’m also on the third floor of my house, so that may have something to do with it…

    Thanks for your great questions!

Definitely look towards the future! I waited so long — and it was worth it. :)

You’ve been around for the long haul! Yes, several rentals along the way on my journey… finally I can breathe deep. :) 3.5 hours is a long haul — ours is about an hour and that is a pain! :)

Thank you! I am always a little hesitant to show my less-than-perfect life, but I figure that’s how most of us live. ;)

Thank you, Lynnette! Comments like this one from you make it worth the little moments of angst when I think, “Maybe I should just show them the pretty parts…” ;)

  • Lynnette

I wouldn’t want to see it any other way…Groovy Girl dolls and all :)

  • Joanie

Great room!  Looks like you are getting everything in order.
We just moved ourselves, and I am thankful that I have at least a little corner that I can call my own.  We know that this is not our final home.  My husband made a comment that I really could use a scrapbooking room, so there is hope for me yet.

He sounds like a keeper to me! :)
